Call for papers

We are happy to announce first Warsaw Workshop in Philosophy of Language. The workshop will take place on 13 and 14 May 2016. Invited speakers include:

  • François Recanati (Institute Jean Nicod, CNRS)
  • Gillian Russell (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill)
  • Joanna Odrowąż-Sypniewska (Instytut Filozofii UW)
  • Karolina Krzyżanowska (Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy, LMU Munich)

The workshop main subject is the issue of meaning and logic of natural language. In particular, we invite submissions related to the following topics:

  • Logic of natural language: logical pluralism vs. logical monism
  • Epistemology of logic: justification of basic logical laws
  • Logical connectives in natural language: how should we account for them? What is the relation between them and their counterparts in classical logic?
  • Conditionals: what is their proper semantic analysis?
  • Pragmatic vs semantic account of meaning: how much pragmatics is involved in determining the truth-conditional meaning? (contextualism vs. minimalism debate)
  • Theoretical vs. experimental approaches to meaning and logical form: should we explore them by using experimental methods? And if yes, how to do?

The list is not exhaustive and we welcome any submission on the topic related to the title issues of the workshop. Moreover, there will be a special section devoted to logical connectives in natural language. Although the primary discipline of the workshop is philosophy, we encourage researchers who take interdisciplinary approach in their subject and method, especially those who benefit from psychology and linguistics.

The language of the workshop is English. We invite submissions in the form of abstracts no longer than 1000 words, suitable for a 30-minute presentation followed by 10 minutes of discussion. The submissions should be prepared for a blind review. All information about the author(s) should be included in the email. The extended deadline for submissions is 12th March 2016. Please send submissions to: logicalconnectives@gmail.com All submissions will undergo a process of peer review.
